Where did Gresham, OR get its name?

Originally called Powell's Valley, the city of Gresham was named after Walter Q. Gresham when a local merchant petitioned for a post office in his shop, offering to name it after Postmaster General Walter Q Gresham. Besides being the 31st postmaster general in the U.S., Gresham also served as a judge and the Secretary of State for presidents Arthur and Cleveland. He was also nominated to be president twice and served as a Brigadier General in the Civil War.
