What makes Salem a unique place to live?

Salem is the State Capital of Oregon and has deep historic roots, playing a significant role in the Oregon Trail history. The city offers a nice mix of natural beauty with urban amenities. Compared to Portland, Salem is a bit quieter, more diverse, and more reliant on cars to get around than public transit. Where did Salem, OR get its name?

In 1846 trustees of the Oregon Institute considered the name Chemeketa, which they thought meant "resting place" by the Kalapuya Indians, but they weren't positive. Some historians believe William H. Willson suggested Salem, the Anglicized version of the biblical name for peace, Shalom. Other historians say the name was chosen by Reverend David Leslie who suggested a Biblical name by using the last part of the world Jerusalem. Salem's nickname is the Cherry City due to the local importance of the cherry growing and even held a Cherry City Festival from 1903 to 1967.
